Elimin8 PO4

1 mL per 100 gallons (1 drop per 5 gallons) binds 0.10 mg/L phosphate.

Characteristics

  • Rapidly binds aqueous phosphate for removal through protein skimming and mechanical filtration.

  • Per 0.01 mg/L PO4: 1 mL per 1,000 gallons (1 drop per 50 gallons)

  • Per 0.10 mg/L PO4: 1 mL per 100 gallons (1 drop per 5 gallons)

  • Per 0.50 mg/L PO4: 1 mL per 20 gallons (1 drop per gallon)

Application

Utilize caution when applying in systems housing scaleless fishes, monitoring them for signs of distress after application and ceasing application if distress is noticed.

Note that Elimin8 PO4 is ~2.5 - 4x more concentrated than many competing formulations marketed to aquarium enthusiasts.  Read the following instructions in their entirety before applying Elimin8 PO4.  Do not overdose this solution.

In marine ecosystems with elevated aqueous phosphate content, recommended is a reduction of phosphate ≤10% per day until the target value is attained.  Thereafter, apply Elimin8 PO4 only as required to maintain the concentration within a range of +/-5% target value, or as close as accuracy and resolution of testing method permits.

  1. Determine phosphate concentration in system utilizing a reliable means of analysis.

  2. Per 0.01 mg/L phosphate reduction desired, apply 1 drop Elimin8 PO4 per 50 gallons net system volume (equivalent to 1 mL per 1,000 gallons net system volume) per 24-hour period.

  3. Re-test phosphate 24 hours after initial application, repeating application every 24 hours as required to reduce phosphate concentration to target value.

In systems with chronic elevated aqueous phosphate content, anticipate that the phosphate concentration will partially rebound within 24 hours of application of Elimin8 PO4 due to release of phosphate from calcareous substrates. See discussion below for additional information.

Discussion

Keep out of reach of children and unauthorized persons. Avoid contact with skin, eyes, and mucous membranes. Store in a cool, dry location away from sunlight.

Elimin8 PO4 is a highly-concentrated lanthanum chloride (USP-grade) solution, applied in accordance with system parameters to reduce and maintain the aqueous phosphate value within a narrow range of the target value.  Due to the importance of phosphate to primary producers (e.g. zooxanthellae, macroalgae, microalgae) and, resultantly, to any symbionts of those organisms, it is important to ensure that adequate phosphate exists in the system to satisfy the requirements of the aforementioned organisms.  If the aqueous phosphate concentration in the system is detectable utilizing a reliable method of analysis (possessing the necessary resolution, which in recirculating marine ecosystems should be at least 0.01 mg/L, with accuracy not less than +/-0.01 mg/L), then Elimin8 PO4 may be applied as necessary to maintain the concentration within a detectable range.

If the phosphate concentration is below the detectable range of a test method with the aforementioned performance characteristics, then it is important to ensure that phosphate is entering the system on a daily basis to provide for the requirements of the aforementioned organisms.

In marine ecosystems with elevated aqueous phosphate content, recommended is a reduction of phosphate not more than 10% per day until the target value is attained.  Thereafter, apply Elimin8 PO4 only as required to maintain the concentration within a range of +/-5% target value if possible.

Note that in systems which have experienced prolonged elevated phosphate concentration, calcareous media (e.g. live sand and aragonite-based live rock) will have absorbed some of the phosphate, gradually releasing it into the system as the phosphate concentration in the system is reduced through application of Elimin8 PO4.  The process of aqueous phosphate reduction in such systems may take weeks or months to remedy, however gradual reduction of phosphate is highly-desirable in mature marine ecosystems so this process, while potentially frustrating for the system technician or aquarist, should not be rushed.  Factors contributing to the duration of this process include: the degree of phosphate enrichment which has occurred; the phosphate budget with respect to input vs. depletion rates; and the extent to which measures are taken to reduce the rate of phosphate input and encourage binding and/or export.

Depletion of available carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus will negatively impact the growth of cohorts consisting in part or entirety of phototrophs; this includes plants, algae, zooxanthellate cnidarians, and poriferans hosting symbiotic zoochlorellae.  Monitor nutrient concentrations and note apparent related impacts on cohort appearance and biomass.  Adjust nutrient content in system as necessary to maintain desired cohort appearance and growth rates.  Do not permit phosphate concentration to fall below 0.01 ppm in systems housing cohorts of photosynthetic organisms, including zooxanthellate cnidarians.

By the mechanism of action in which lanthanum binds phosphate ions, so it also binds carbonate ions.  Application of Elimin8 PO4 may result in a small decrease in alkalinity.  Monitor this parameter and adjust as system requirements dictate.  If an increase in alkalinity is required following application of Elimin8 PO4, then recommended is to allow the system volume to turnover ten times after application before making the adjustment to alkalinity; this period of time permits adequate interaction between the lanthanum ions and aqueous phosphate that the majority of potential binding is likely to have occurred.
